Anesthesia Fellowship Program

The Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship Program accepts 2 fellows each year starting in July. The duration of the appointment is 12 months. The number of required clinical days in the operating rooms is approximately 144. Fellows in Anesthesia, supervised by members of the anesthesia staff, are expected to engage in clinical activities including some on-call (two week days per week and one weekend in six). Fellows will rotate through cardiac, neurosurgery and also be exposed to general surgery, thoracic surgery, orthopedics, otolaryngology, urology, dental, plastic surgery, ophthalmology, and radiology. There is also a commitment to the Acute Pain Service. Pain call is assigned on average every 1 in 6 weeks including weekends. Fellows will also be involved in the consult service and in the Pre-admission Clinic. An elective rotation may be arranged relating to the fellows’ interests and may include Pediatric ICU. Fellows are expected to attend participate in all rounds and to prepare presentations for rounds where indicated. Rounds consist of monthly morbidity and mortality rounds, daily morning teaching rounds, quarterly journal club, monthly fellows interesting case rounds and UBC Anesthesia Visiting Professor Series rounds. Approximately two 30 minute resident sessions per month will be taught by the fellows focusing on issues concerning pediatric anesthesia. Fellows are also responsible to give at least 2 formal presentations during the year. Two days per week are set aside for academic pursuits for Fellows. These may consist of clinical research projects or basic science research projects in association with the University of British Columbia or other Hospital Departments. Other special academic projects may be arranged from time to time at the wish of the Fellow concerned. It is expected that every Fellow will complete at least 1 project to the publication or presentation stage during their period of Fellowship and all assistance will be given to them in completing this. Fellows are also expected to publish at least one case report and review article during their year. |
